Why Our Dahlia U-Pick Events Mean So Much to Us
There is something deeply meaningful about spending time on a farm.
Before EarthSpoke Farms ever existed, before we planted our first rows of dahlias or welcomed visitors through our gates, we were simply children experiencing little pieces of farm life ourselves.
Growing up as city girls, our parents intentionally made space for us to experience nature. Every year our family would pack up and head to Oregon for camping trips beneath the stars. Somewhere along those trips, simple experiences began quietly shaping our hearts.
One of our favorite annual traditions was visiting a U-Pick blueberry farm. Mary was so little she mostly spent the visit eating blueberries straight off the bushes while the rest of us filled buckets beside her. We loved those memories so much that our parents bought her the classic children’s book Blueberries for Sal.
At the time, we had no idea those moments would eventually inspire us to start a flower farm of our own.
But looking back now, it is clear those experiences planted something lasting in us.
How Childhood Farm Experiences Inspired EarthSpoke Farms
The beauty of visiting farms as children stayed with us long into adulthood. The fresh air, the quietness of nature, the connection to the seasons, and the feeling of wonder all became part of who we were.
Those experiences gave us a dream: to someday create a place where other people could experience that same sense of beauty, peace, and connection.
Today, that dream has become EarthSpoke Farms.
Every year we host seasonal dahlia U-Pick events on our coastal flower farm near Mendocino, California. Visitors are invited to walk through thousands of blooming dahlias, create bouquets, take photographs, and spend time surrounded by flowers, trees, and ocean air.
And truly, we believe experiences like this matter.
Why Visiting a Flower Farm Can Be So Meaningful
It may sound dramatic to say that time on a flower farm can shape someone’s life, but we believe it can.
We believe slowing down matters.
We believe children remember experiences in nature.
We believe beauty nourishes the soul.
Walking through rows of dahlias while cool coastal breezes move through the fields creates a kind of peace that is increasingly rare in modern life. For many visitors, our farm becomes a place to reconnect with loved ones, celebrate milestones, and make memories together.
Over the years, we have watched our flower farm become the setting for some incredibly meaningful moments:
- Pregnancy announcements among the dahlias
- Intimate gender reveals
- Anniversary celebrations
- Family photo sessions
- Friendships strengthened over bouquet picking
- Children experiencing a flower farm for the very first time
One of our greatest joys is hearing your stories and watching families experience the farm together.
What to Expect at Our 2026 Dahlia U-Pick Events
This year’s U-Pick season is especially exciting for us.
