The Perfect Mendocino Weekend Itinerary: Where to Stay, Eat, and Explore on California's North Coast
If you're planning a weekend in Mendocino, California, you're in for something special.
As both former visitors and now locals, we've experienced Mendocino from both sides. We first fell in love with this coastal town while visiting in 2018 and eventually moved here to build EarthSpoke Farms.
Whether you're visiting for our seasonal U-Pick flower events or simply looking for one of the most beautiful coastal getaways in California, here's our ideal two-day Mendocino itinerary.
Before You Even Arrive
Here's a little bonus tip from someone who used to make this drive as a visitor.
When my family first started visiting Mendocino, one of our favorite traditions was stopping in Santa Rosa before heading west toward the coast.
One of our favorite stops was Freaking Tacos. It's a tiny taco shop that serves some seriously incredible Mexican food. Even now, years later, it still feels like part of the Mendocino tradition for our family.
From there, many visitors make their way to the coast via Highway 128.
Highway 128 is a beautiful drive, but it is definitely a winding one. If you're prone to car sickness, consider this your friendly warning to keep your eyes on the road and maybe skip reading your phone for a while!!
The route takes you past vineyards, little farm stands, rolling countryside, and some truly stunning scenery. One minute you're winding through wine country, and before long you'll find yourself surrounded by towering redwoods.
Where to Stay in Mendocino
Van Damme State Park Campground
If you love camping, Van Damme State Park is one of the best places to stay on the Mendocino Coast. Nestled among towering redwoods and located just minutes from the ocean, it's a beautiful basecamp for a weekend adventure.
Sea Rock Inn
For ocean views and cozy cottage charm, Sea Rock Inn is one of our favorite recommendations. Located just a couple miles from EarthSpoke Farms, it's close to both Mendocino and Fort Bragg while offering incredible views of the Pacific Ocean.
Mendocino Grove
If you're looking for something between camping and a hotel stay, Mendocino Grove is hard to beat. Their luxury canvas tents offer the outdoor experience of camping with many of the comforts of a boutique hotel.
Friday Evening: Arrive and Relax
After arriving on the coast, keep dinner simple.
By the time you've finished the drive along Highway 128 or Highway 20, there's a good chance you'll be ready for a relaxed meal and an early evening.
Frankie's Pizza
Frankie's is a great choice if you want to grab a pizza, settle into your accommodations, and unwind after a day on the road.
Patterson's Pub
Another favorite is Patterson's Pub in Mendocino.
The burgers are excellent, the atmosphere is casual and welcoming, and if you sit outside you'll find one of the quirkiest little attractions in town: a whimsical gnome garden that's worth a few minutes of exploring while you wait for your food.
Either option makes for a perfect first meal before settling in for the weekend.
After arriving on the coast, keep dinner simple.
Saturday Morning: Breakfast in Mendocino
GoodLife Cafe & Bakery
If you only follow one recommendation from this itinerary, make it this one.
Order the pancakes.
I've tried ordering other things, and every single time someone else's pancakes arrive at the table and I steal a bite. So now I always order the pancake combo, 2 pancakes scrambled eggs with cheese and bacon. Yum! They may honestly be the best pancakes I've ever had.
Saturday: Visit EarthSpoke Farms
Every Saturday in August and September, we EarthSpoke Farms host seasonal U-Pick flower experiences.
Guests begin with an introduction to our 24-acre regenerative flower farm before heading into our U-Pick garden to harvest their own flowers.
Your experience includes:
- Learning how to harvest flowers
- Creating a farm-to-jar bouquet
- Selecting beautiful dahlias
- Exploring the farm
- Photo opportunities throughout the property
- Access to seasonal merchandise
- A coupon for a free dahlia tuber during our Spring 2027 sale
With ocean air, coastal views, and thousands of flowers, it's one of the most unique things to do in Mendocino during late summer.
Lunch: Pizza Picnic at Big River Beach
After your U-Pick experience, grab lunch and head to Big River Beach.
One of our favorite options is The Brickery, where you can grab a delicious pizza and enjoy it in their garden or I would take it picnic-style along the river and beach. Big River is one of the most peaceful spots on the Mendocino Coast, with calm water, beautiful coastal trees, and plenty of sandy shoreline to spread out and relax.
If pizza sounds a little repetitive after dinner at Frankie's the night before, don't worry. We have a few other favorite grab-and-go options.
The Gnar Bar in Mendocino is one of my favorite hidden gems. Their pork dumplings are delicious, and I'm always happy with a spam musubi. It's the perfect spot to grab a quick lunch before heading to the beach.
Another excellent option is Mendocino Market, a local sandwich shop that makes fantastic sandwiches and picnic fare.
Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of these options. Grab your food, find a spot at Big River, and enjoy one of the most beautiful picnic settings on the coast.
Afternoon: Explore the Coast
Point Cabrillo Lighthouse
Located just down the road from our farm, Point Cabrillo Lighthouse is one of the most scenic lighthouse walks in California.
The easy walk offers beautiful ocean views and frequent opportunities to spot wildlife.
Mendocino Headlands
The Mendocino Headlands are another must-see destination. Walking these coastal trails feels almost otherworldly, with dramatic cliffs, sea caves, crashing waves, and endless ocean views.
Dinner in Fort Bragg
La Palapa Mexican Restaurant
One of our family's favorite dinner spots.
Coming from Southern California, we're pretty picky about Mexican food, and La Palapa consistently delivers.
Sunday Brunch Before Heading Home
Cafe Beaujolais
Cafe Beaujolais is famous for its Sunday brunch and is a wonderful final stop before heading home.
It's a beloved Mendocino institution and the perfect way to end a coastal getaway.
If You Have Extra Time
Some additional favorite things to do in Mendocino include:
- Visiting the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens (more dahlias!!!!)
- Canoeing or kayaking on Big River
- Exploring downtown Mendocino shops
- Exploring downtown Fort Bragg
- Visiting local beaches and coastal trails
- Hiking the Russian Gulch Waterfall Loop
Russian Gulch Waterfall Hike
If you're able to extend your stay, one of our absolute favorite hikes on the Mendocino Coast is the Russian Gulch Waterfall Trail.
The hike is a bit longer than some of the easier coastal walks, but the reward is worth every step. The trail winds through beautiful forest before ending at a stunning waterfall tucked away among the redwoods.
It's one of those places that makes you stop and simply appreciate how beautiful Northern California can be.
Why We Keep Coming Back to Mendocino
The funny thing about Mendocino is that most visitors don't visit just once.
We certainly didn't.
What began as a simple weekend getaway eventually became our home and the birthplace of EarthSpoke Farms.
There's something about the combination of redwoods, ocean views, small-town charm, and slower pace that keeps drawing people back.
We hope you'll come experience it for yourself.
